A Father-Daughter Story from Offshore Wind
This National Apprenticeship Week, Dilraj Singh and his daughter Gurnoor Sekhon share their journey into offshore wind.
We’ve created this zone to provide useful information whether you're a parent, carer, teacher or careers advisor to help demystify some of the misconceptions behind apprenticeship programmes.
At RWE, we undestand your role is important in helping people to make the right choices about their future. We want to make sure that we are supporting you to feel informed and confident in providing career support and guidance, so that ultimately you can help make the best decisions for them.
Although university may seem like an obvious choice, an apprenticeship can offer just as many opportunities. Do you see you’re your students/child sitting in a lecture and continuing in academia to learn theory? Or would they prefer a practical education, where they can directly gain work experience in the commercial or technical field?
Gaining more qualifications after 16 or 18 is a sensible idea, as it usually means more job choices and improved employability. If your child has a particular career in mind, then an apprenticeship could be worth considering. Apprenticeships give fantastic experience of the working world. An opportunity to:
If your child has already secured an offer of employment or an apprenticeship on their expected or predicted results, it’s also a good idea to confirm this place with the employer once they have received their results. Whether or not your child gets the grades needed, it’s always important to keep the potential employer fully informed of developments.

“During my time at school, various companies presented themselves to me in class with their training opportunities. This gave me a personal overview of the different areas and professions and made it easier for me to decide against studying and for the right apprenticeship and employer.”

Drive, motivation, high standards - RWE loves real bundles of energy. If you count your students/child among them, they are a perfect fit for us as an energy company!
Even as an apprentice at RWE, you bear responsibility. Responsibility for the future.
This requires good training, and your students/child will get it at RWE. From an early stage, your students/child can contribute their own ideas in various areas. Right from the start of their training, your students/child will be challenged and encouraged to play their part in ensuring a secure energy supply.
We provide all apprentices with the best possible support! What this can look like and what advantages and offers an apprenticeship at RWE can bring your student/child depends on the respective apprenticeship occupation and location, but you can be sure that RWE as a Group not only offers its apprentices many advantages. You can find out what these are in detail on our UK Apprenticeships details pages.
We have summarised all the information on the subject of applying to RWE on the page "Application tips for students". Feel free to discuss the contents with your students/child and support them as needed.
You and your student/child will also find answers to many other questions on our comprehensive FAQ page.
If anything is still unclear, our colleagues from the training department are always available to answer your questions. Please also encourage your students to contact us personally if they have any questions. The contact persons and contact details are listed under the individual training occupations.
Of course, as an inclusive employer, we want to support you to perform at your best at each stage of our recruitment process and can make adjustments to ensure this. If you’d like to request any adjustments or know how we can support you better, please contact us confidentially.
