Efficient hard-coal-fired power plant 

Aberthaw was a coal-fired power plant located in Wales in the UK. With a capacity of around 1,560 MW it generated enough power to meet the needs of 1.5 million households.

We invested in technologies to reduce emissions at Aberthaw, such as the Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) technology, that reduces sulphur emissions by up to 95% and installed low NOx boiler technology to Unit 9  which reduced emissions by over 90%. 

The station was compliant with the IED through its ability to use a wider range of coals including high volatile. In addition, we changed the operating regime, to focus on ensuring secure capacity was available when needed but with lower energy generation operations.

On 31 March 2020 the station closed. RWE transferred Aberthaw Power Station’s existing Capacity Market agreements for the years 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 to third parties and a small proportion to other units within RWE’s fleet. See here for the full press release.
