Swindon, 9 May 2023

RWE, the world’s second largest offshore wind player has reaffirmed its commitment to the Humber with announcements that herald the creation of new local jobs and supply chain opportunities for the region.

More than 20 new offshore wind turbine technicians are now being sought for RWE’s 1.4 gigawatt (GW) Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, the company’s largest offshore project under construction.

These roles will be based out of RWE’s new operations and maintenance base that is now under construction. Called the Grimsby Hub, the base is an extension of the existing Triton Knoll facility and is well on track to be completed by the end of the year. An integral part of the Grimsby Hub is a new Centralised Control Room (CCR)  which will oversee the operation of RWE’s UK offshore windfarms and need a skilled team to operate the facility.

RWE’s Grimsby Hub and CCR will accommodate around 140 RWE employees, requiring around 70 new local jobs, plus many additional indirect jobs to support. The opening of applications for the 20 new Sofia offshore wind turbine technicians marks the start of a new recruitment drive for the first of these roles.

These roles are now being advertised to ensure that newly appointed employees will have time to be trained and to gain the necessary experience before being full deployed on Sofia in readiness for first electricity generation in 2025.

Guy Middleton RWE General Manager for the Grimsby Hub commented, “A skilled workforce is at the heart of a successful growing green business, and we are excited about the launch of our recruitment process. The Grimsby Hub will be essential to successfully manage and maintain our growing fleet of offshore wind farms in the UK; our activities in the region will also bring skilled roles and provide opportunities for the regional supply chain.”

RWE is a leading renewables player and has ambitions to invest £15bn in the UK up to 2030, developing clean energy projects to support the green transition, while creating high quality green jobs across the length and breadth of the country.

During 2022, the 856 megawatts (MW) Triton Knoll offshore wind farm became fully operational, while RWE’s 1.4 GW Sofia offshore wind farm is well into construction. RWE is also involved in four of the UK’s seven offshore wind extension projects and recently signed Agreements for Lease for their two Dogger Bank South offshore wind farm sites. Meanwhile, the company is also exploring floating wind projects including in the Celtic Sea region.

Applications for the new roles are open until Friday 26 May, 2023 on the RWE Careers page of the company’s website.
