Planning consent granted for Clachaig Glen Wind Farm, paving the way for further renewable energy growth in Argyll & Bute
12.11.2024
RWE, Wales’ number one renewable electricity generator, is to hold an early stage informal consultation on proposals for a wind farm of approximately 28 turbines on a site in north-west Powys.
If approved, the Carnedd Wen Wind Farm will be constructed in Llanbrynmair Forest and once operational would have an installed capacity capable of generating power equivalent to the needs of approximately 179,000 households.
This is set to be the first of two rounds of consultation as RWE seeks to hear from local people on different aspects of the scheme, from construction and operations to community benefits and the potential for shared or local ownership.
This proposal replaces a previous application which was withdrawn in 2020.
Jennifer Pearson, Project Lead for RWE, said: “Wales and Powys both have ambitious targets for renewable energy generation, which Carnedd Wen Wind Farm has the potential to make a significant contribution towards.
“Although a number of aspects may change during the course of development our proposals are now at a point where we are able to share information on the project and seek views from local communities.
“Throughout this three week period, I encourage individuals to read about our initial plans, speak with members of the team either via phone, e-mail or at our in-person events, and let us know their thoughts.”
RWE is the largest power producer in Wales and the leading generator of power in the UK, including from its wide ranging renewables fleet, which includes onshore and offshore wind.
The company’s existing renewable energy portfolio already generates one third of Wales’ renewable energy production – enough to power 550,000 homes. RWE directly employs around 350 people in Wales, based at its development office in Baglan and at operational sites in Pembroke, Llandarcy, Port of Mostyn and Dolgarrog.
RWE is also developing plans for onshore wind farms at Gaerwen and Alwen Forest in north Wales and Abertillery and Pen March in south Wales, in addition to the Awel y Môr Offshore Wind Farm, and the Craig y Perthi Solar Farm near Newport.
The consultation is to run from 6 to 27 November. Two in-person events are to take place on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 November, in Llanbrynmair and Llanerfyl respectively.
