RWE celebrates next milestone for Sofia offshore wind farm, with installation of first turbine.

RWE, the UK’s leading electricity generator, is holding a second public exhibition for its proposed green hydrogen project in Scotland, near Grangemouth. The project will produce green hydrogen through the electrolysis of water, using renewable energy from the electricity grid. The green hydrogen produced will be transported via pipeline to an adjacent industrial offtaker, reducing their CO2 emissions.
Following the initial consultation in December 2024, and further design and environmental studies, RWE has refined its plans and is inviting the community to look at the project and share their thoughts.
The consultation period is scheduled to run from 24 March to 7 April and the public can provide feedback during this period. A public exhibition will take place on 26 March at the Grangemouth Community Education Hub, from 3 pm to 7pm where people can view plans and speak to the project team. For those unable to attend, a virtual exhibition will be available.
Detailed information about the proposals and the methods for providing feedback can be found on the project page or by contacting the project team via email or by phone 0800 0129 163, or post at FREEPOST RWE GREEN HYDROGEN.
Nicole Tang, Hydrogen Project Development Manager: "We are absolutely delighted by the positive feedback we have received so far. By listening to local views, we can identify what's important to the community and where possible incorporate that into shaping the project design. We are very pleased to make a positive contribution, bringing potential new investment and a new green technology into the area.”
The plant will be located within the Grangemouth industrial area and a Scoping Report has already been submitted to Falkirk Council. RWE expect to submit a planning application in summer 2025.
RWE currently owns or operates around 480 megawatts (MW) of installed renewable capacity in Scotland across 26 sites, including 15 hydropower plants, 10 onshore wind and one offshore wind farm, as well as the 55MW biomass combined heat and power plant in Fife. RWE has offices in Perth and Inverness and directly employs around 100 people (and many more indirectly) at the company’s sites and in offices across Scotland.
