Today (13 December) the UK Government published the Clean Power Action Plan, setting out how it will achieve the 2030 Clean Power target.
Tom Glover, RWE UK Country Chair:
"Achieving clean power by 2030 is incredibly ambitious, but as a ‘north star’ can help accelerate investment and deployment.
Achieving the target will require a relentless focus on delivery and swift, bold and sustained action on all fronts. In the Plan published today, RWE welcomes clarity on the steps the Government will take to unblock the grid connection queue and to streamline and accelerate the approval of new energy infrastructure.
Estimated annual investment of £40bn principally by the private sector will support new economic opportunities and jobs across the UK. To minimise costs and maximise benefits to the consumer, it is vital that the Government provides investors with clarity on the future market design that will underpin our power system in 2030 and beyond. Whilst RWE has long advocated for stronger locational signals, we believe zonal pricing will only bring market disruption and investor risk that will undermine any theoretical benefits.
We strongly welcome steps to accelerate the delivery of renewables through targeted amendments of the CfD, in particular reform of the parameters to ensure the benefit to UK consumers of renewable deployment is more accurately reflected.
Above all, it is clear from the Plan published today that prioritising the delivery of projects that are most advanced in their development will be critical to meeting the target, in particular projects that already have planning consent.
We look forward to continuing to work closely with NESO, the Government, regulators, other industry players, and communities to achieve a clean power system that is secure, reliable, affordable, and fair for all”
