UK Armed Forces Day, celebrated on June 29, 2024, is more than just a date on the calendar. It’s a day to honour the men and women, and their families, who have dedicated their lives to protecting our way of living.
This year, as we celebrate the contributions of our armed forces, we also spotlight the incredible opportunities for veterans and service leavers in the renewable energy sector. We sat down with Marcus Peters, Global Head of Offshore HSE at RWE Offshore, to discuss how the transition from military service to a career in offshore wind can be a rewarding journey for veterans.
I started my career in the Royal Navy Submarine Service, where I served for ten years. After transitioning into civilian life, I moved into Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) roles within the renewable energy sector. Currently, I lead global HSE teams for RWE’s offshore energy projects, focusing on development, construction, and new markets. My military background has been invaluable in this field, particularly in terms of leadership, resilience, and strategic thinking.
RWE is deeply committed to supporting the Armed Forces community. We recognise the unique skills that veterans bring to the table – skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability. Our initiatives, such as the Military Working Group within the Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC), are designed to facilitate the transition from military service to the renewable energy sector. We focus on creating clear career pathways, offering upskilling opportunities, and promoting inclusivity and diversity within our workforce.
One of the main challenges is translating military skills into civilian qualifications. Many veterans possess extensive experience and skills that are highly relevant to the renewable energy sector, but they may lack formal civilian certifications. At RWE, we work to bridge this gap by providing training and certification programs tailored to the needs of veterans. Additionally, we offer mentorship programs where veterans can connect with experienced professionals who can guide them through the transition process.
Veterans bring a wealth of skills that are directly applicable to offshore wind. For instance, their experience in high-pressure environments, strategic planning, and technology operation aligns perfectly with the demands of offshore energy projects. Veterans are accustomed to working in dynamic and challenging conditions, which makes them ideally suited for roles in offshore wind. Their commitment to mission success and their ability to adapt quickly to new situations are qualities that we highly value.
I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all members of the Armed Forces for their service and dedication. At RWE, we believe that your skills and experiences are invaluable assets that can drive innovation and growth in the renewable energy sector. We are committed to supporting your transition and providing you with rewarding career opportunities. Together, we can build a sustainable future while honouring the incredible contributions you have made to our nation.
As we celebrate our armed forces on this day, let’s recognise the remarkable potential within our veteran community. Companies like RWE are leading the way for veterans to thrive in new careers, bringing their invaluable skills to the forefront of the energy transition.
