Blyton Energy Storage

Project Introduction

RWE is progressing proposals for the Blyton Energy Storage project, which would be a battery energy storage system (BESS) on land near Blyton, Lincolnshire. 

The UK has made a binding commitment to achieve a net zero fully decarbonised power system by 2035. This can only be achieved with the adoption and roll-out of reliable, affordable, clean energy sources such as solar and wind, however, those sources are intermittent. BESS are necessary to achieve net zero, improve the electivity grid’s stability, and reduce energy bills.

As a responsible developer and operator, we place immense value on local input. Your feedback is integral to our process, and it will significantly influence the refinement of our final proposals.

Our Proposals

The site comprises approximately 7 hectares (ha) of land located to the north of Pilham Lane, located between the settlements of Blyton and Pilham. The site lies within the jurisdiction of Blyton Parish Council.

The battery would have a maximum charge power of 35.5MW and would connect via underground cabling to the proximate existing Blyton substation. 

Once operational, the Blyton Energy Storage project would have the ability to meet the average daily domestic energy needs of more than 6,000 typical UK homes. 

The need for energy storage

Blyton Energy Storage will be charged when the energy supply is higher than demand and therefore ensure that excess energy is not wasted. It will then release this energy at times when the energy supply is not sufficient. Conventionally, this has been done through generating electricity through fossil fuels, such as natural gas. 

Electricity is consumed in real time and this technology will, where possible, enable homes and businesses to be powered by renewable energy. BESS offers the ability to reduce our dependency on non-renewable energy sources and provide immediate injections of electricity into the grid when it is needed. 

BESS is simply a large-scale version of batteries commonly used in homes, such as in TV remotes, torches or children’s toys.

We listen to, and build relationships with, the people, organisations, and stakeholders we work with, to understand their views and accommodate change where possible, helping to leave a positive legacy behind when our work is complete.


Public consultation

As part of our public consultation, we will hold an in-person consultation event on 14th of November at the Blyton Memorial Hall from 3pm to 7pm.

The consultation period will close on the 3rd of December, after which we will carefully review comments made, and incorporate feedback into our final application.
