As the UK strives to meet its ambitious target of tripling solar capacity by 2030, ground-mounted solar farms are set to play a pivotal role in achieving net zero. These large-scale projects not only deliver clean, affordable energy but also offer significant biodiversity benefits and much-needed support for the rural economy.

Accelerating Solar Deployment

Solar farms are among the quickest renewable energy technologies to build. Once operational, they provide reliable, home-grown energy that strengthens the UK’s energy security and contributes to addressing the cost-of-living crisis. However, with a goal of reaching 50 GW of solar by 2030, annual solar deployment rates need to increase substantially, making the acceleration of solar farm construction essential.

Supporting British Farming and Enhancing Biodiversity

Solar farms currently occupy just 0.1% of UK land, but their contribution goes far beyond energy generation. They offer farmers a valuable opportunity to diversify their income while continuing to produce food on their most productive land. At the same time, these projects deliver biodiversity gains well above the statutory 10% net gain target, contributing to the recovery of local ecosystems.

RWE's Commitment to Responsible Development

At RWE, we are committed to being a responsible and long-term solar developer. Our UK Solar Developer’s Charter outlines 15 key commitments, focusing on maximising biodiversity, engaging meaningfully with local communities, and respecting local heritage and landscapes. We believe that solar farms should not only generate clean energy but also provide lasting benefits for the environment and local residents.

Looking Ahead: The need for Continued Government Support

While the government’s support for solar power has been crucial, further reforms are necessary. Addressing issues in planning and grid infrastructure will be key to ensuring the rapid deployment of solar farms at the scale needed to meet the UK’s clean energy goals. Continued collaboration between industry and government will be essential to making this vision a reality.
