RWE in Scotland

Scotland has been a key partner for RWE for over 25 years. Over that time, we have delivered many clean energy projects in partnership with local communities, with ambitious plans to grow even further.

RWE currently owns or operates ~ 470 megawatts (MW) of installed renewable capacity in Scotland across 27 sites, including 15 hydropower,  10 onshore wind, one offshore wind and our 55MW  biomass combined heat and power plant in Fife. We have offices in Perth and Inverness and directly employ around 100 people (and many more indirectly) at our sites and in our offices.

Since first generation, renewable energy projects operated by RWE have invested more than £7.8 million into Scottish communities neighbouring our sites, through their community benefit funds. Over their lifetime, the renewable energy projects currently in operation / construction will contribute over £53 million into Scottish communities.

Through our pipeline of future development projects, we are fully committed to helping Scotland achieve its ambitious climate change targets.

Biomass: RWE built and operates Markinch Biomass Combined Heat & Power district heating plant, which provides heat to the Glenrothes Energy Network, a renewable district heating network which officially opened in April 2019.

Green Hydrogen: In 2024, RWE announced the development of an up to 200MWe green hydrogen production project at Grangemouth, continuing our innovation story in Scotland and underlining our continued commitment to the country’s decarbonisation.
